AIDS Lifecycle Kick-off

After the ride, I went home to get ready for the AIDS Lifecycle Kick-off Party. I had received an email earlier, from a fellow rider, Bob Katz from the SF area. He wanted to take his time to meet me- the newbie with the falls. It felt good, knowing that people from the Bay area are aware of my struggle (in falling) but also the strength I am building because of the support from all the riders.

I went and picked up my fellow cyclist buddy, Frederick. He is always very animated and fun to be around- great person to continue that “high” from my ride earlier in the day.

We showed up to the Sheraton Hotel by LAX- it was AMAZING how many people showed up, but it’s even more amazing to know that everyone that was there, was there to support the same cause. We had fellow cyclists, that are doing the 545 mile ride, and also the Roadies, who without their help, the ride would not happen (they are the ones that wake up early during the ride to get the signage ready for the road, the food, the water stop, putting up and taking down the tents—the list goes on and on….

Frederick and I made our rounds saying hi to people- he introduced me to many other “Friends of Bill W. and Dr. Bob”. Another great community within my AIDS Lifecycle community. I finally went over to where Bob Katz was at- it was great to meet someone that has contributed to ride as he has. I met others frm the group—and they all knew my story. Lol.. it’s good to know they either read my blogs, or the words gets out. Brendan had shared with some of my day- he apologized for “talking about me”, but I see it as he is just looking out for me, and trying to help me find ways, from others, how to help me become a better rider.

They showed the ALC 6 ride videos-- I’ve seen them soo many times and each time, they just give me CHILLS! That is what I needed to see, and I needed to meet others, that believe in the cause—I am so grateful to be part of the community of AIDS Lifecycle.

Hearing the personal stories, the numbers of who have signed up, the money raised to help those living with HIV/AIDS, and also knowing that the money helps for prevention efforts- so HIV/AIDS stop increasing in diagnosis--- all of that, plus more is WHY I AM DOING THE RIDE. I can write so much about the feelings of being there, but truly, it is difficult to explain. I am in good hands- I belong to a new family.

I look forward in my upcoming rides—I look forward to making a difference in the 545 mile ride. This challenge and journey is truly what I need in my life now!
